Coach Ken Carter, head basketball coach for Richmond High School in California from 1997-2002, made news when he locked out the undefeated varsity team (including his own son) in order to push them to improve their grades. These inner-city students came back to the court with a new view on winning, and motivated to pursue college educations and futures they hadn’t considered before. These real-life events inspired the hit movie Coach Carter, starring Samuel L. Jackson. Today Carter is an advocate for Richmond’s youth, and his non-profit Coach Ken Carter Foundation promotes and provides education, training and mentoring programs for minority youths. He also founded the Coach Carter Impact Academy, designed to enable disadvantaged youth to reach their full academic and life potential. In addition, he owns Prime Time Publications, Prime Time Sports, and is a renowned author and speaker.
